Back & sides Granadillo (from Hibdon)
Top Cedar
Neck Mahogany with Sycamore centre strip (and rosewood/mahogany wings on the headstock salvaged from offcuts from another neck)
maple binding
Rosewood fingerboard & bridge
Bone nut & saddle

this guitar is for a friend in church. She & her husband have just started a business so there isn't any spare cash floating around, so they can have it for the cost of the bits......(paying it forward, y'know?)

The business is tree surgery, so you never know how they'll pay my good deed back!!

What can I say about granadillo?

looks a bit like mahogany but as hard as hard stuff. You could sand it from now til christmas and not make a scratch in it.

It SMELLS nice & spicy though but leaves a little peppery heat up the nostrils.......

the segmented rosette was a first too, the pale lines are maple, the dark segments are offcuts of the granadillo.

so what's WRONG with this guitar?

there is a Slight hump on the fingerboard which filing the frets cancells out (only 1/2 a mm or so), and the tuner holes on one side are slightly nearer the edge than on the other other than that I'm very happy with it, and if I hadn't promised it to Tricia, I'd be doing a Hesh and keeping it!!

I'm very grateful to the gang at Hibdon for a chance to use a wood I'd probably never have encountered otherwise. I'm looking forward to getting at the leopardwood I got in the same parcel.........

Very nice Martin! Nice bright sound, too. I love the rosette and offset fret markers as well as the granadillo. What was the finish?

In re the granadillo, does the color bleed like rosewood or does it stay put. How was bending it? Does it need to be pore filled? Cheers!

Finish was stewmacs colortone clear waterbased lacquer

Never bothered pore filling, I just bunged on an extra few coats then sanded off the high bits!!

I bent it on a hot pipe, but it was too thick (about 3mm) so it was hard work, thinner is prolly easier!

As for colour bleed, I didn't notice any, either on the rosette or sides.

Great sounding guitar Martin! Looks very nice as well.
I'm looking forward to building something with the granadillo set I got from Hibdon. Still haven't decided what to build with it.....hmmmm, maybe an OLF slope shoulder dred.

I wonder if there are different types of Granadillo. Mine worked and looked different. It is hard, but not as hard as say, Bubinga. My sets from LMI were brick reddish in color. I am a fan of sapwood, so I got 2 ests with sapwood.

Hi Martin,

Looks really good. I was hoping to see what became of some of that
granadillo.

I like your headstock too...reminds me a little of an Ibanez Iceman I used to
own as a lad. (Had to have a guitar like Paul Stanley of Kiss)!

Ok answers....

the fret markers are based on a Turner like this.......

(I appreciate that this is a rip off of a Taylor, but I HAVE a Turner not a Taylor!!)

the headstock just sort of eveolved...... sort of Seagull meets Dermot McIlroy I guess

It was collected yesterday by the new owner and she was delighted with it. It's smaller bodied than a dread and the neck is a hair narrower than standard.

My Mrs said that it looked like a "Girly" guitar. I asked if she meant anything to do with the narrow waist and wide hips but she hit me!!!

Apparently Tricia agrees with the femininity, and she's a breast feeding co-ordinator at a maternity hospital, so she seems to know femininity when she sees it!!

What I didn't say in the other thread in the other forum is that the headstock is entirely unique and fabulous!!

I didn't see the laminated wings, very very nice touch. There really is an idenetity beginning to develop here, you know, "This is a Martin Edwards guitar..."

As for it being feminine, yes it really does appeal to me; not just the shape, but the tasteful appointments. Other "Feminine" guitars I see on the web are usually purple with abundant abalone bling butterflies and I am afraid not all women find that appealing.

Martin, I always enjoy it when someone puts creative thought into design. Well done. The granadillo looks quite interesting, as if Indian rosewood and walnut got married and had a sappling. I like it.

I enjoyed your sound clip, too. Nice contrast. Were you channeling a bit of Alvin Lee at Woodstock in the first part?    Great sustain on the final note, too!

Thanks folks, it's really great to get good feedback from people who make guitars.

the metalhead teenagers over on the JAm Session forum are a lot easier to impress that you guys are cos you're been there I guess!!

As for Jim Croce & Alvin Lee?

never heard of 'em, I'll have to go look!!

and as for woodstock, I was 3!!, though I did get locked in to a 2nd floor TV room during a late night showing of the Woodstock Movie while I was at college.

Glad I was sober when I escaped out onto the roof & down a fire escape at 3am!!!!
